SHERIFF DEPARTMENT TO AUCTION SEIZED GUNS

Nov 05, 2013
ALEXANDRIA, LA—On Saturday, November 9, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Department will be selling over 500 seized guns. Proceeds will be used for the department’s general fund, as well as to purchase new firearms for the department’s police officers.

Each of the firearms, which date back to the 1980’s, have undergone rigorous scrutiny.  The department has verified that none of the weapons belong to an open criminal case and that all stolen guns have been returned to their rightful owners.  Guns without serial numbers have been destroyed, and no automatic assault weapons (machine guns, uzi’s, etc.) will be available for purchase.

Barbara Bonnette, one of the auctioneers managing the sale, noted, “The guns are being sold without any reserve. Every gun will sell, regardless of price.  With the size and range of the selection of firearms on the block, it’s going to be easy to come home with a gun that you like for a great price.”

Brands of both long guns and hand guns to be auctioned include Beretta, Browning, Charter Arms, Glock, Hi Standard, Jennings, Marlin, Remington, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, Winchester and many more. There are approximately 350 hand guns and 200 long guns.

Bidding at the auction will require similar criteria as required when buying recreational guns at licensed stores and gun shows.  Each bidder will be required to present a current, valid drivers license; and each buyer must pass an Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms background check.  “There isn’t a loop hole in the system.  Bidders need to know that we will be vigilant in protecting the public’s safety,” added Barbara Bonnette, another one of the sale’s managing auctioneers.

Online bidding will be available, and Internet bidders will be required to pass all of the same criteria and background checks as those bidding live on-site.  The guns will be available for preview at the auction site at 3804 McKeithen Drive in Alexandria on Saturday Nov. 9th from 8AM until auction time.
